All's Fair in Love and Law P2!!!!!!
This time featuring women >:] I wanted to have them similar ages as the male set without disrupting the timeline too much so here's the list of all of them; i imagine its like. set in between the last PW game and the first AJ game, so not quite post seven year gap but somewhere in between! And also Mia is alive because shes like. the only female lawyer lmao - I also went with characters who I felt would have the most tangible and dynamic relationship to one another among the limited options and relationship with the male cast too
here are the current decided ages (shoutout to Njorlpinipini with this post compiling a semi-canon birthdate list that i studied intently to make my calculations)
Also to the one person who reblogged the original post saying that they wanted to see Athena i apologise profusely because i knew I only wanted adult characters in the cast from the get go but I still felt like you were robbed so here's a sketch of her <3 the silliest!!!!!!

Determining Ages and Birth Years
Kimetsu no Yaiba’s first official fanbook gave us ages for the many of the main characters, but in a manga where calculating age can be crucial, why are these numbers not so straightforward? Because the Japanese calendar is a mess, and the Taisho period was an in-between stage in many ways. Many new changes were established in the Meiji period but not broadly enforced until the Showa period, including how to count one’s age.
This subject can be terribly complicated, but please follow me below for:
--Historical context for how methods of counting age could differ --Which method I choose to apply to Kimetsu no Yaiba and why --Based on that, a list of my calculations for dates of birth, zodiac signs (Chinese and Western), and because it’s handy, the date each of these characters would have turned 25
In the Taisho period, there are two methods of counting age in play:
Kazoedoshi (“counting years”): Counting the years one has been in alive in, with that year having started on the agricultural new year and counting a new year to one’s age each New Year’s Day after that, like how it is still practiced in South Korea.
Which is to say, you are born at age 1, counting the first calendar year you lived in, and on the following New Year’s Day, you are age 2, even if you have only been out of the womb a very short time.
Mannenrei (“full year age”): Counting only each full 12-month period since your birth as part of your age, like how it is practiced in the United States of America.
Which is to say, you are born at age 0, and after twelve full months have passed, you are age 1.
Kazoedoshi was practiced through most of the Demon Slayer Corp’s history, but the Meiji government enforced a switch to Mannenrei in 1902. However, most people still practiced Kazoedoshi throughout the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods, and it wasn’t until 1950 that the government reinforced the switch to Mannenrei. This is also when, with the influx of American culture due to the post-war occupation, individual birthdays started to be marked with cake and presents. Until that time, people did not pay much attention to their date of birthday besides, perhaps, a passing notion and maybe a shrine or temple visit and a nice dinner (see more on this post). Many people continued to count their own age in Kazoedoshi until 1950, and although some people liked the “oh, actually I’m younger than I thought I was!” surprise (because Manrenrei really was outside of their usual way of thinking), it made centenarians a little sad that they hadn’t actually reached 100.
Similarly, even though the Meiji government enforced a switch to the Gregorian calendar which put New Years on January 1, many people still celebrated a sliding date according to a lunar-based agricultural calendar, like is still done in China. It was likewise later reinforced.
In modern Japan, New Years on Gregorian January 1 and counting age by the Mannenrei system are the norm and standard, however, some customs (especially but not limited to religious customs) are still celebrated according to the agricultural calendar and Kazoedoshi ages. It’s annoying to keep track of and if I had a 5-yen coin for every time I say the Japanese calendar is a mess, I’d have a lot more yen.
The canon of Kimetsu no Yaiba does not specify any of the following: 1. What year most of KnY takes place (but based on clues from the Hand Demon, we can extrapolate that most of it takes place in 1915) 2. Whether the characters’ given ages are according to Kazoedoshi or Mannenrei, and whether the characters’ given birthdates are according to the Gregorian or agricultural calendars 3. Which method the characters use to count New Years and their own age 4. If there are any differences among the cast and how they count these things (like if the city-slickers were with the times and the country bumpkins were not) 5. Whether or not Amane accounted for Mannenrei or Kazoedoshi when stating that all the marked swordsmen of the Sengoku period died by the age of 25
So what are fanfic writers who are preoccupied with canon accuracy to do? How much should the fans of characters who got the mark fret?
After tying my brain in knots (for years, since I attempted tackling this issue years ago and this is my better post addressing the issue(s)), here are the ways that I approach it.
First: I firmly treat most of the events of canon as firmly taking place in Gregorian 1915, with the Final Selection taking place that winter and Muzan’s defeat coming sometime around the very end of 1915 or start of 1916. (See here for how I calculated all the time frames indicated in canon. You’re welcome.)
Second, we have to treat the official fanbook material in the context of how it was published. I think the ages in the fanbook are given in Mannenrei for the benefit of Heisei/Reiwa period readers, but if you really want to dig into it, the characters might interpret their own age differently based on Kazoedoshi, since it was such a prevalent way to count one’s age even for people born in the Taisho period. For example, Tanjirou’s given canon age is 15 (Mannenrei), but if you ask him in-universe, he might say he is 17 (Kazoedoshi).
Even if we assume many of the characters use the agricultural calendar and Kazoedoshi, there is a chance that characters who actively used western technology—for example, Shinobu, who uses textbooks in English microscopes and thermometers that likely came from Germany—had switched to Mannenrei for the sake of more accuracy on an individual basis. It is also possible that the Corp enacted their own standardization to Mannenrei around the time they standardized uniforms and updated the payment structure. If this is the case, it might have required country bumpkins to rethink the systems they had always been used to. Tanjirou, if asked in-universe once he is a Corp member, would therefore say he is 15 (Mannenrei).
The places the Kazoedoshi/Mannenrei difference has more implications is where characters have stated their own age. For example, Himejima seems to use a Mannenrei system (he states that he became a Hashira at age 19, and now is clearly over the age of 25, with his canonical age being recorded as 27. The numbers check out). This makes me more curious about Muichirou, who has a canonical given age of 14, but says in his own recollection that he was 10 when he was orphaned, and 11 when Yuichirou died.
If Mannenrei: It was four years or more ago that his parents died, and then sometime after he and Yuichirou turned 11 on Gregorian August 8, the demon attacked on a hot summer night. If Kazoedoshi: It was four years or more ago that his parents died. New Years passed that winter and he and Yuichirou turned 11. Many more months passed before the demon attacked on a hot summer night. However, if the Corp enforces his Mannenrei age of 14, but being a country bumpkin with a fuzzy memory, Muichirou still thinks of himself in Kazoedoshi, thereby making him think of himself as 16: It was six years or more ago that his parents died. New Years passed that winter and he and Yuichirou turned 11. Many more months passed before the demon attacked on a hot summer night. He nonetheless became a Hashira relatively recently (according to aligning Kyojuro-related flashback material and the second fanbook making passing mention that he hasn’t been a Hashira that long so his impression of the others isn’t that deep). This implies he spent a very, very, very, very long time incapacitated before he could so much as hold a sword, let alone join the Final Selection.
So what if we consider the opposite, that every given age is in Kazoedoshi? That would mean that when the fanbook and Tanjirou say he is 15, we would translate that back to a Mannenrei age of 13. And, dear readers, do you really want to imagine the entire cast being one or two years younger than their given age? I didn’t think so.
It is already very, very difficult to determine the order of Kimetsu no Yaiba canon both due to incomplete histories and canonical errors introduced by outside material (Ufotable animating Kanao’s May 19 encounter with the Kochou sisters with a winter setting, or Hirano-sensei drawing a spread of all nine Hashira in a 1913 setting) or timeline errors introduced in the original manga likely due to oversight (Gotouge drawing Aoi in uniform shortly after Kanae’s death when Aoi is later stated to have attended the same Final Selection as Muichirou, who at the time Kanae died is likely still living with his parents). That is why I assume the following rule of thumb:
When ages are given in-universe or in supplementary material, assume it is Mannenrei, because this is a shounen manga and not a math textbook. (As another case in point, the heights of the characters would have made most of the characters giants in Taisho society, though they get away with just being a bit on the tall side in Reiwa society. Some things are simplified for the benefit of modern readers.)
Assume the characters do not pay much attention to their age, or their birthday, because this is a shounen manga with a lot of dedication to historical settings and folk traditions (and those folks didn’t pay much attention to their birthdays).
Ergo: If the Corp tells its members “this is your Mannenrei age, use it. When we say 25, we have already done the math from our Sengoku period records and we mean 25 in Mannenrei,” the Corp members probably accept that. However, the Corp members might think of it as having two ages for two different purposes. Given the prevalence of Kazoedoshi, in their heart, they might still think of New Years as the time when you collectively celebrate everyone’s birthday.
Since I’m assuming Mannenrei, I’m also assuming Gregorian birthdates, and assuming everyone’s given canon age to be the age they were during the Infinity Fortress battle that took place roughly around New Year’s Day 1916.
Why am I picking this date? Because this is when the first fanbook was published, and it treated canon as it was occurring at that time in publication, so Akaza, Douma, and Kokushibou were not yet given the “eliminated” status (also, Rengoku was given already called “former” Flame Hashira. Shinobu’s demise had not yet been published in the serialization).
I also say “roughly New Year” because of the agricultural/Gregorian calendar issues. The agricultural New Year’s Day in 1916 would have fallen on Gregorian February 4, but because I’m treating this as the Corp having adopted Mannenrei, I’m also having them treat Gregorian January 1 as New Years. Because Ubuyashiki Nichika and Hinaki were singing a New Years song when Muzan strolled in to visit, that leans credence toward it happening around then. More crucially, cherry blossoms are in full bloom “three months later,” which aligns it best with Gregorian January 1, since late March/early April is when you are most likely to get the full bloom of the most common somei-yoshino cherry trees.
It’s also a convenient date and time in the plot to measure by because all their birthdays would have passed for that year, barely including Nezuko’s. (But if Mugen Ressha took place prior to May, like I have calculated before… does this mean Rengoku would have been part of Team 21? My gosh, I’m crying. For this list, I’m treating it as the age he would have been relative to the others on that date.)
Tl;dr: I’m assuming you can treat every canon age as Mannenrei, and totally ignore Kazoedoshi in the first place (unless if it will help you be crafty in your fic, because there’s still a good case to be made for the characters using it).
Now here is the fanfic reference list I promised, including: 1. Their date of birth according to the Gregorian calendar, calculated based their canon age being their Mannenrei age as of December 31, 1915. 2. Their birth year according to the Japanese period 3. The year they would have turned 25 4. Their Chinese zodiac sign (yes, I know there is argument about whether or not you can say “zodiac” here, but this isn’t the place to start a new topic. Anyway, I’ve also included the elements for each year for the deep nerds who anticipate it) (also I’m really sorry, Inosuke is not born in the Year of the Boar, nor is Iguro born in the Year of the Snake) 5. Their Western zodiac sign (yes, I know there was a recalculation of sun signs some years back, but no, I’m not bothering to take that into account, this post is complicated enough as it is) Important caveat: I'm bad at math.
Kamado Tanjirou: July 14, 1900/Meiji 33 (1925/Taisho 14), Metal Rat, Cancer Kamado Nezuko: December 28, 1901/Meiji 34 (1926/Taisho 15), Metal Ox, Capricorn Agatsuma Zenitsu: September 3, 1899/Meiji 32 (1924/Taisho 13), Earth Boar, Virgo Hashibira Inosuke: April 22 (as was written on his fundoshi along with his name), 1900/Meiji 33 (1925/Taisho 14), Metal Rat, Taurus Tsuyuri Kanao: May 19 (chosen for the day she encountered the Kochou sisters), 1899/Meiji 32 (sometime in 1924??/Taisho 13??), Earth Boar(?), Taurus (???) Shinazugawa Genya: January 7, 1899/Meiji 32 (1924/Taisho 13) – by Gregorian/modern Japanese system he is an Earth Boar, but the agricultural New Year wasn’t until February 10 that year, so he might instead be considered an Earth Dog, Capricorn Tomioka Giyuu: February 8, 1894/Meiji 27 (1919/Taisho 8), Wood Horse, Aquarius Kochou Shinobu: February 24, 1897/Meiji 30 (1822/Taisho 11), Fire Rooster, Pisces Rengoku Kyoujurou: May 10, 1895/Meiji 28 (1920/Taisho 9), Wood Sheep, Taurus Uzui Tengen: October 31, 1892/Meiji 25 (1917/Taisho 6), Water Dragon, Scorpio Kanroji Mitsuri: June 1, 1896/Meiji 29 (1921/Taisho 10), Fire Monkey, Gemini Tokitou Muichirou: August 8, 1901/Meiji 34 (1926/Taisho 15), Metal Ox, Leo Himejima Gyoumei: August 23, 1888/Meiji 21 (1913/Taisho 2), Earth Rat, Virgo Shinazugawa Sanemi: November 29, 1894/Meiji 27 (1919/Taisho 8), Wood Horse, Sagittarius Iguro Obanai: September 15,1894/Meiji 27 (1919/Taisho 8), Wood Horse, Virgo
Afterword:
Suppose Amane didn’t do the math to state the Sengoku swordsmans’ ages in Mannenrei terms? What if their records were spotty, or she took Kazoedoshi and applied it to swordsmen who now use Mannenrei?
Well, in that case, Tanjirou would probably die sometime in 1923, and Giyuu & Sanemi sometime in 1917. Ergo, I think I will stick with Amane having done the math and converted Sengoku ages to Mannennei if she was going to tell them all something so important.
Also, using Kazoedoshi would totally mess with the Kimetsu Gakuen AU.

⚖️𓇢𓆸 PERSONALITY ୧ ‧₊˚ ♟️
Ryuji is a person that is misunderstood by many.
Although not actively attempting to be so, he is very unnerving and intimidating to be around, an after-effect of the curse that's been placed upon him. He can be easily distracted in conversations, eyes always focusing somewhere else, darting to the darkened corners of the room, and he has a habit to mumble little things to himself, nonsensical and hushed, as if trying to be discreet. Not to mention the aura of death that surrounds him at all times, chilling the atmosphere around him, making it almost impossible to hang out with him peacefully. Most people just write him off entirely, saying the boy is too "weird" or "creepy" to handle.
But Ryuji at his core truly is a kind and caring person. Although he has a rough and tough exterior, tending to be very blunt and cold with his words, once you get to know him on a closer level, it's clear that he cares very deeply about many things. He's thoughtful and considerate, always going out of his way for others that he loves, doing just the smallest little gestures of kindness.
Yet despite his gentle nature, he has been hardened by the cruel realities of their world. He doesn't trust easily, holding all those that dare come close at arms length. He is sharp and quick-witted, and tends to neglect things like socializing and talking in favour of training or studying. He can also be very quick to anger, snapping at what can be assumed to be just the littlest of things, which oftentimes leaves him isolated from others.
He truly has created a self-fulfilling prophecy; afraid to let those near him to get too close, too closed off for those near to allow themselves to do the same.
୧ ‧₊˚ 🍇 ⋅ ☆
Ryuji has been stuck at the Sector for twelve long, torturous years. Despite training for almost all of his life, honing his abilities and skills to near-perfection, for some reason the boy can’t seem to be allowed along any sort of mission that fits his skillset. He is held back, for apparently no reason at all, each of his requests for a promotion sharply turned down by the Leader of the Seventh Sector, Ophelia Dyal.
He is restless, unable to complete his mission as a Noroi Hunter and vanquish the very demon that set his life on such a path of death and destruction. No matter how hard he tries, it seems he cannot escape this horrible fate that has awaited him since he was six years old.
And yet, with the stirrings of a new hero to change it all, Ryuji is brought closer to his life-long dream of breaking his curse. It is with each day that he draws nearer to coming face to face with the very person he has avoided for so long, that he wonders if he’s strong enough to go through with it…..

Traits || Mysterious, calculative, quiet, hard-working, tough with a hard exterior
Alignment || Neutral
Likes || Science, nature, botany, sketching, being alone, rain, the library, candles
Dislikes || Noroi, training, sleeping, people, talking, big crowds, being too busy, ghosts, his family, most things, himself, life in general

⚖️𓇢𓆸 APPEARANCE ୧ ‧₊˚ ♟️
Ryuji is most notably defined by his Mark. Taking up the entire right side of his face, a burn scar stretches across his skin, marring his features; his eye has also suffered extreme damage, appearing to be half-closed, a milky white in colour with splotches of red nearing its edges. And his flesh looks to be pulled taught, a darker brown than the rest of his face, the skin decayed and withered.
And still, the boy couldn’t be more beautiful. With a sharp jaw, smooth dark skin the deepest shade of brown, and a black-lined monolid eye a deep charcoal in colour, swirling like the deep abyss of the night, he looks truly ethereal. His hair is shoulder-length, normally pulled into a half-up, half-down style. The right portion of his locs have begun to turn a silvery-white colour. He can also frequently be seen with silver filigree tubes adorning the locs. Dark, blackened eye bags are present underneath his eyes, giving him an appearance of being eternally exhausted.
Evident of his strict training schedule, Ryuji has a very muscular build. He’s lean with toned muscles. Not exactly bulging like a bodybuilder, yet still quite noticeably muscular, something you would notice almost immediately. Along with his towering height and strong build, it just seems to add to his aura of intimidation.
Height || 6’0”
Aesthetic || Ryuji dresses very prim and proper. With a dark aesthetic of browns, dark grays, and black, he can almost always be found in a suit or something similar. It’s very formal clothing, something that sets him apart from the rest of the sector, giving him an almost distinguished look. But it’s most times that his clothes are also in a rumpled disarray, obviously very hastily pulled on. He dislikes wearing a lot of jewelry, as he says it irritates his skin.
…..⋅˚₊‧ ଳ ‧₊˚ ⋅ ⋅˚₊‧ ଳ ‧₊˚ ⋅ ⋅˚₊‧ ଳ ‧₊˚ ⋅ ⋅˚₊‧ ଳ ‧₊˚ ⋅ ⋅˚₊‧ ଳ ‧₊˚ ⋅…..
⚖️𓇢𓆸 ORIGINS ୧ ‧₊˚ ♟️
Ryuji was born to the seventh region of Seras, otherwise known as the home to the Seventh Sector. Eposa, a land akin to the Mediterranean, was once beautifully rich. Long rolling hills, thriving plant life, and a sparkling, deep green ocean bordering it, white waves lapping near the beaches. It was also known for its impressive architecture, stunning marble buildings that just completed the vision of ethereal glory that the region once was. But with the rise of Noroi, the region has been reduced to a crumbling whisper of the society it once was. Barren and cold, the grassy hills have become more blackened rock than grass, the sea dark and murky, completely unforgiving to all its inhabitants. It’s become a place of poverty and death — not riches and wealth.
Ryuji’s family was small, unimportant in the grand scheme of things. His mother was an orphan, who didn’t have much to her name. She worked all kinds of odd jobs, doing anything to provide for her children, even if it meant losing parts of herself in the process. She’d do it all, as long as it meant they had food on the table at the end of every night. They moved around a lot during Ryuji’s early life, finally settling on a small cabin at the edge of the woods, where they kept their own self-sustaining garden and strayed away from the people of the town next over. It was just them against the universe.
୧ ‧₊˚ 🍇 ⋅ ☆
Ryuji’s life was never truly calm, even as a small child. With only smaller, distinct memories of his father, most of his childhood was spent with his single mother and his siblings. She kept them mostly isolated, constantly hopping from town to town, doing what she needed to get by. That time of his life was a blur, his only strong memories being that of his time with his twin brother — his best friend — who he was immensely grateful for as his lifelong companion. Being on the run was more fun with him by his side.
It was around the time he and his twin brother turned five-years-old that their mother finally decided it was safe enough for them to settle down. They found a cabin that bordered on the edge of one of the abandoned woodlands in the far south of Eposa. With a small town to their right, it seemed like the perfect place to grow up. Homeschooled by their mother during the day, with their eldest sister to take care of them during the nights, their life finally had some sort of semblance of balance to it. Ryuji felt truly happy. His family was all that he needed.
It was on a darkened winter night of his sixth year that Ryuji and his twin brother lay awake, waiting for their mother to return home late. And it was this very night that another creature entirely lurked outside the walls of their cabin, ready to tear away the peaceful life Ryuji had grown to hold so dearly……

୧ ‧₊˚ 🍇 ⋅ ☆
Being the second-eldest to four children, Ryuji comes from quite the large family, despite everything. Being so young when he lost them, his memories of them are short, simple. He remembers the time of his life with them as gentle and carefree. He and his siblings were all incredibly close, each day spent playing with each other. But out of them all, he was closest with his twin brother, who couldn’t be more alike him. They seemed to be linked to a single mind, always attached at the hip. There was nowhere Ryuji would go where his brother couldn’t be closely behind, grinning and chasing after him.
Since being taken into the Seventh Sector, the size of his family has dramatically decreased. He no longer has the giggles of children to surround him anymore, his home at the base being quite quiet and lonely, for the most part. Of course, he has his mother, Ophelia, who he’s very close with. She always seems to know just what he needs, giving him silence and space when the world is too suffocating, and comfort and hushed reassurances when the voices threaten to pull him from reality altogether. He loves her dearly, despite the times where he feels frustrated and resentful that she’s so protective over him. He doesn’t know where he’d be without her at his side.
And of course he has Aster, his older brother and best friend. He was the first person that Ryuji truly met when he arrived at the Seventh Sector, and the first person who showed him genuine kindness. They did almost everything together, two peas in a pod, always there for each other. Ryuji thinks Aster pulled him out from the other side, after he arrived at the base. He doesn’t know if he’d still be alive if he didn’t have Aster’s kindness and sunny disposition to ward off the hateful voices and spirits that haunted him. Even apart, the boys couldn’t be more close. No stretch of land, no matter how many miles long, could break their tight knit bond.
And there’s Kageko. Someone who was born to be his best friend, he is now no more than a reminder of Ryuji’s past, of his grief. A spiteful ghost that never seems to shut up, no matter how much Ryuji wills him to, he’s more of a nuisance than a true companion. Yet, being a part of Ryuji for so long, the boy isn’t sure what he’d do without Kageko. Torn between the urge to get rid of him and never let him go, he’s not sure who he is without his twin brother to drive all of his actions. He doesn’t know if he is even more than a hollow shell, without Kageko to fill the gaping hole.
୧ ‧₊˚ 🍇 ⋅ ☆
As for friends, Ryuji doesn’t have many. Having a reputation for being the “weird heir that talks to ghosts all day”, it’s hard for him to truly connect with people. Though, it’s not like he’s particularly interested in meeting new people in the first place. Being on his own is better. He is more content this way. It’s supposed to be this way.
Yet somehow, he found himself one of the best friends he could ever hope for. Odesa, who is sometimes the only person he has left to tether him to the ground, couldn’t be a truer friend. Odesa is loud and rambunctious, a drastic contrast to Ryuji, and the first friend he made at the base. A girl who he at first would have declared was his sworn rival has now become the person he’d dare whisper all his darkest secrets to. Both of them compliment each other, turning the others harsh edges soft, rounding each other out. They’ve sworn an oath to get out of the Seventh Sector, together, no one left behind. Ryuji will fight by Odesa’s side until the day he dies.

⚖️𓇢𓆸 THE SEVENTH SECTOR ୧ ˚ ♟️
Curse || Spectre
Ryuji, just like Aster, belongs to the Immortai: the undead warriors that dedicate their lives to eradicating the Noroi that ravage their earth. Although not uncommon inside the Seventh Sector, Ryuji was cursed as a child, leaving him, like many, in the awkward stage of a child forced to grow too quickly, grief burdening him all throughout it.
Ryuji’s curse is very ostracized around the Sector, a large factor into why he is so alone amongst so many hunters that have so many similarities to him. He has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts and spirits, as well as control them to defeat Noroi. This in turn causes his body to lose connection with the living world, slowly causing him to lose his form, until he is reduced to another ghost himself. It’s source stems from Ryuji’s scar on his face, which is where his Mageia rests.
Ryuji has very little control over his own curse. He despises it deeply, wishing to completely rid it from himself rather than use it. It doesn’t help that Kageko’s voice is constantly in his head, poking and prodding at him, unhelpfully reminding him of each and every one of his failures and losses. It is because his curse takes such a toll not only on his physical form but his mind, being a constant that he cannot shut off, unlike some Immortai, that makes him hate it even more. And it is his hatred and uncontrollable emotions that just feeds his curse, amplifying it to the extreme. The spirits that haunt Ryuji never go away, no matter how hard he tries to gain control over them.
Because of his lackluster abilities in containing his curse, Ryuji has instead forced all of his own energy into his swordsmanship. He uses twin Thai-Laos Dhaab swords, otherwise known as “Dha”. He is extremely skilled with his weapon, his own swords being specially crafted to suit his curse, and is known as the best swordsman inside the entire Seventh Sector. It truly is a surprise that he’s kept at a rank so low, with skills like this. Surely being out on the battlefield would benefit the whole of the Division much more than keeping him as a guard, but the Leader works in mysterious ways.
For now, Ryuji is stuck in his lowly position at the base, as ghosts chatter in his ears and he tries his best not to scare off the younger recruits. He trains, and trains, and trains. One day, he will be rewarded for his hard work. And the words of a vengeful spirit punishing him for all his failings won’t matter anymore.

⚖️𓇢𓆸 EXTRA TIDBITS ୧ ‧₊˚ ♟️
Ryuji is secretly quite a hopeless romantic. He’s read a lot of romance books and has forbidden dreams of a soft, picturesque summer romance with candlelit dates and quiet nights gazing at the stars.
He’s very knowledgeable on flowers and plants, and can list quite a wide arrange of facts off the top of his head.
He has a really intimidating aura so most people steer clear of him but in actuality he’s really socially awkward and has no clue how to talk to people.
He dislikes the idea of the Division quite a lot and wishes he could leave it forever. Yet it seems like his only option, so he stays.
People think him to be very violent when really he’s the exact opposite of it.
He works part-time inside of the Infirmary, which is where he met Dior.
He has the tendency to forget to take care of himself. Sometimes he gets so caught up in training, studying, or researching that he’ll go days without really sleeping, eating, bathing, or moving. It gets worse when Aster is more busy on missions and he has no one to pull him out of his head.
He doesn’t get along with animals.

team position: center-back, no. 24
face claims: sadie sink [teen] ﹠ amy adams [adult]
pre-crash biography
—valentine grew up in wiskayok, new jersey, with a childhood marked by instability and responsibility. their home life was messy—absent father, an emotionally volatile mother. from an early age, she wasn’t just van’s sister; she was van’s protector, provider, and emotional shield. she was never really a child. while van cracked jokes and sought attention, val took on the role of the responsible one, making sure van ate, making excuses for their mother, ensuring her sister had a semblance of normalcy. she was more of a mother than a sibling. the weight of that responsibility shaped her personality—she was intensely protective but distant, struggling to express emotions outright. instead of affection, she showed her love through watchfulness, actions, and sacrifice.
—was best friends with shauna and jackie, though the dynamic was complicated. it was supposed to be a trio, but she always felt like the third wheel. jackie and shauna had a deep, unshakable bond, and valentine, despite her loyalty, could never break into that closeness. she loved them both, but in different ways—jackie was the confident leader, shauna the steady counterpart, and val? she was the outsider looking in. despite feeling on the outskirts, jackie valued val’s sharpness—she was the one who saw through people’s bullshit, who called out uncomfortable truths. shauna confided in her sometimes, but only when jackie wasn’t around. that stung.
—theater was val’s escape for a while. it was one of the few things that allowed her to express emotion freely without feeling vulnerable. but eventually, she quit and returned to soccer. not for herself, but for van. she begged coach martinezto bring her back, even though she hadn’t played in a while. she told herself it was just to keep an eye on van (though tai was there for her, too), but deep down, she wanted to prove she could still belong somewhere.
—was a queer witch. it wasn’t just an aesthetic—it was a part of her, a connection to something greater, something grounding. while she never forced it on anyone, she practiced in secret. her spells weren’t just for magic; they were for protection, stability, and survival. her queerness was something she never really discussed, not out of shame, but out of self-preservation. she was out to a select few, but it wasn’t something she waved around. in wiskayok, it was easier to keep things to herself.
post-crash: wilderness biography
—when the plane went down, valentine didn’t panic. she calculated. she was one of the first to assess their situation, to help gather supplies, to think ahead. she had always been a survivor. no time for panic, no time for tears—just survival. she wasn’t a leader, but she became a necessary presence, someone who got things done. she knew how to stitch a wound, how to make fire, how to find food.
—the first time she killed, it wasn’t for herself—it was for them. the group was starving, desperate. and valentine did what needed to be done. she slit a throat, watched the life drain out of something she once would have hesitated to harm. she told herself it was necessary, but the first kill haunts you in ways you don’t expect. the darkness in the wilderness at first, she refused to kill. but hunger, desperation, and love for her people pushed her over the edge. she started hunting, killing for the group—sometimes animals, sometimes… worse. she hated herself for it.
—performed rituals to ease the guilt, using her witchcraft to atone for what she had done. but over time, the lines between protection and darkness blurred. wasn’t mindless like some of the others who lost themselves in the wild. now, her darkness was intentional, precise—like a spider weaving a web. she didn’t want to believe in whatever strange power was in the woods, but she couldn’t deny that she felt it. it called to her, and eventually, she answered. it didn’t start with blood rituals. it started with small things—whispers, quiet prayers, things done in the name of protecting the people she cared about. but it escalated. valentine had never been religious, but the wilderness was a religion. the rules were different there, and caring for others could drive you to places you never thought you’d go.
—lottie fascinated her. valentine never fully believed in lottie’s visions, but she couldn’t deny the strange power that surrounded her. as things got worse, she found herself drawn to lottie, not because she wanted to believe, but because she needed something to hold onto. lottie and her got close. not as a follower, not as a believer in everything lottie said, but as someone who understood that there were forces bigger than them at play. valentine never became fully swept up in lottie’s teachings, but she understood them. sometimes, she even embraced them.
—laura lee’s death devastated her. they had become friends, an unlikely connection in a place that drained the light from people. when laura lee was the first to die, it rattled val. she had been holding onto the idea that someone, somehow, would save them. laura lee’s death shattered that illusion then jackie died, and val never forgave herself for not protecting her. she had always been on the outskirts of jackie and shauna’s friendship, but she had cared. she should have done more.
post-crash: adulthood biography
—returning to a world that didn’t understand when she came back, she tried to be normal. she got married to a man she thought she could build a life with. it didn’t last. she had a daughter through surrogacy—vivian palmer—because she thought maybe a family could fix her. it didn’t.
—she was an domineering mother, the same way she had been with van in the wilderness. she wanted to give her daughter a childhood that she never had, to shield her from the darkness that still lived inside of her. but secrets rot, and no matter how much she tried to keep the truth from vivian, it came out in other ways—in her paranoia, in her nightmares, in the way she still carried herself like someone waiting for the world to end.
—vivian didn’t know who valentine really was—not at first. val had hidden that part of herself, just like van had tried to hide from the wilderness. but the past always finds a way back.

From wip game of birds
🦆asker's request: whump/pain please ;w;
For Lure 😈
Pain wracked through him, horrible searing pain that made his vision darken around the edges before he recognized Kaiba looming over him. The pressure on his wounded shoulder came from Kaiba's hand, heavy as a boulder. It felt wet? Was it blood? A cold sweat broke over his entire body.
Fuck, he wished he could black out. That'd be a mercy!
"I can tell when your simpleton brain is plotting something beyond your means. You should forget it now."
"I wasn't scheming. I swear!" Jounouchi nearly screamed.
🦩dealer's choice >_<
His curiosity got the better of him. Seto already knew too much about him, while Jounouchi knew next to nothing about him. If Seto didn't want him to read the file, he shouldn't have damn well handed it to him. His eyes scanned the top few lines. What he learned ranged from unsurprising—both of Seto's parents were deceased—to mildly surprising—Seto's family name, Higata—to the jaw-dropping—Seto's birthdate. Despite his appearance, Jounouchi had always been fast with numbers and it took no time to calculate his age.
"Goddammit, you're a kid!"
Seto stiffened before swiveling so fast even Jounouchi felt whiplash on his behalf. He was still reeling when Seto appeared in front of him, having abandoned his search in the file boxes, and snatched the papers out of Jounouchi's hand. "No, I'm not," he snarled. "I'm 23."

Some of the Justice Society had actual birthdates, which I think makes things interesting. Jay Garrick was born in 1918, Bruce Wayne was born in 1915, Rex Tyler was born in 1913, Johnny Thunder was born in 1917 and Jim Corrigan was apparently born in 1900. Now I just wish we had birthdates for other characters. I headcanon that Al Pratt was born in 1921 (and that Terry Sloane was born the same year), but I struggle with some of the others.
I wish there was more definitive birth dates for characters like Alan Scott, Charles Mcnider, Ted Knight, Ma Hunkel, etc. If you want me to believe in Infinity Inc, it'd go a long way for me to have birthdates for these characters, so I know when they became heroes, when they had kids, when their kids reached maturity, etc. It's the one form of math I understand: calculating age. From a year, I can get all the possible ages. It's a bit dark when I apply the math to people in real life, but it's a boring sort of fun when applied to characters in comics.

One of the PF prompts for October is superstition, and I've had this idea for ages—it's in my fic but I just want to keep a record of it in a more expository form.
The following headcanon concept is in extreme danger of being jossed as soon as the devs decide to release official birthdates or anything, like in the upcoming lore book. But while I have the room to explore—
Since there are Eikons tied to certain specific nations, the people of those countries might start to develop internal superstitions about the best season in which their Dominant should be born, as a good omen of sorts. This superstition/folk belief is heavily inspired by the east Asian astrologies that calculate the date and hour etc. of a child’s birth to predict a person’s life and destiny (and also the compatibility of couples).
Rosaria would obviously think it best for the Dominant of Fire to be born during summer, and places like the Northern Territories would want their Shiva born in winter to signify a strong, divinely blessed Dominant. Maybe the people of the Water want theirs born during the monsoon or peak rainy season, not that I know whether or not Valisthea even has monsoons. So in this concept, coincidentally Rosaria and Sanbreque have the same cultural superstition: that the Dominant of Fire or Light born during summer, and particularly near the solstice, would symbolise luck and power, like a favoured child of destiny. Rosaria because it’s the hottest, brightest season, and similar for Sanbreque, because it is the brightest, longest light.
And in a situation of such folk beliefs being widely held, I would want Dion born exactly on the summer solstice, literally the specialest, most auspicious day, in a “all our stars have aligned” way, the absolute height of divine favour smiling onto Sanbreque to produce this shining godsend (goddess-send), and this is the first, but by no means the last, of the things about Dion that wholly convince his people that their new Bahamut is blessing personified, is the radiant chosen one of Greagor, to usher the empire into a new golden age and defend her against all their enemies and deliver them from penury (the encroaching blight).
(Privately, if I'm honest, Cancer is the least suitable western astrological sign to assign to Dion, not that there’s any real scientific basis in any of it.)
In the reverse, I would want Joshua born in deep winter, which is worrying and ominous for Rosaria. Ideally I really want him on the winter solstice, but he can’t be in “December” [or its equivalent] and remain in the same calendar year as Dion (in my heart of hearts I really want 25 December to go full Jesus on Joshua), but a birthday right at the start of “January” would be great, when it is dark and cold and bleak, a fierce bitter winter that augurs ill, and therefore the Rosarians whispered quiet fears about this, blamed Anabella about this, and when Joshua turned out so sickly and weak, also blamed and doubted the child of ill-fate. A fire of no warmth and little light.
Love heaping the pressure onto Dion and Joshua in opposing and complementary ways. Dion’s countrymen think he’s absolutely perfect, the pinnacle of Bahamuts, an unprecedented prodigy that made his father’s political enemies sweat from the moment of his birth, and when Sylvestre ascended the throne the people looked at their new prince, their guiding light, their radiant star—and approved of it, approved of him, like yes, yes, this is our destiny. This is Sanbreque’s future. This is what the Goddess has ordained.
So: Dion is strong and perfect, is told by everyone all the time that he is strong and perfect; he can only be strong, he was made perfect, he cannot be anything except strong and perfect. Weakness is not only forbidden, it is impossible, for the Goddess’ blessing is flawless and cannot fail, and any personal weakness wouldn’t concern only him, it would spell disaster for his whole country. Which is the sort of thing that gives a child a very particular sort of damage.
And the winter-born Phoenix, imperfect from the wrong and unlucky season of his birth and frail throughout his childhood, knows his people don’t believe in him, that they have no confidence in him and think of him as weak—born flawed and continues to be flawed, with a fragile constitution, frequently ill. The thing about superstitions is that it is worsened by pre-existing doubt or concurrent fears, and since Joshua’s physical condition does not inspire confidence in the troops or the populace, their confirmation bias will amplify their worries and negative gut feelings. It’s a vicious cycle. Child!Joshua, who perfectly perceives and understands his people’s lack of faith in him, will naturally learn to feel self-doubt and inferior, because that’s what happens when children are bombarded by consistent messages from their environment.
We know for a fact he knows this, because at Phoenix Gate he literally says “they don’t believe in me”. He says “I don’t have what it takes”, he says “I don’t have the strength”. And he says to Clive, “it should have been you.” The sense of inadequacy is deep, cutting, persistent, and profound. There is a standard to meet, and he understands how badly he falls short. “They don’t believe in me, they believe in the power of the Dominant.” Will his full prime Phoenix form hold up in battle? This seems like a question that should lowkey eat away at everyone in the prologue. Everyone is hoping that the full primed Phoenix will be enough, the way the Eikon has always been enough, because the current Dominant clearly isn’t. Putting aside how self-doubt tends to lead to self-sabotage, for a 10-year-old to say something that hopeless and crushing in his quiet little voice, this is more than a hushed confession of weakness, it is resignation—and as we discover, he does not even need to enter war to experience defeat, and it is only the first in a string of massive defeats to come. His lack of strength doesn’t concern only him, it spells disaster for his whole country. Which is the sort of thing that gives a child a very particular sort of damage, and makes for a beautifully poetic counterpart to summer-Dion.
It's the contrast and foil between the lucky child/the unlucky child—who is which cannot be clearly defined—and between the weak child/the strong child—or, the child who was always told he’s weak, the child who was always told he’s strong. Which leads into the onscreen transformation over the course of gameplay: the exalted Sanbrequois prince who plummets into weakness and has to learn how not to break, the vanquished Rosarian prince who rises to strength and has to learn how to survive, finding each other as adults who embrace and comfort each other’s weaknesses, and become each other’s strength.
Supplementary notes:
Clive should be born in summer too, probably “August” or something when it was unseasonably hot and dry that year, and even the non-superstitious thought Anabella did a splendid job and were super enthusiastic for their new Dominant to wake—he’s going to be a proper fire Dominant, this one, the world is already scorching at his arrival. I love anything that exacerbates Rosfield family dysfunction.
One of the most amusing things about such a superstition would be that certain Motes would try extremely hard to conceive at certain times. The tribes in the Northern Territories would be like omg time for a new Shiva, we are 8-10 months out from winter, everyone get down to business!!!
People should blame Anabella, illogically, for the time of Joshua's birth and add to the sense of persecution and disgrace she seems to feel about her children. I've a strong headcanon, even without this superstition, that Joshua is a preemie. It's such a but of course concept to me, that Joshua is a premature baby, and not just a little bit premature, but the kind of premature that could never have survived in medieval times without the Phoenix. So if the pregnancy had remained on track, perhaps Josh would have been a "February" baby—still winter, not great, but without turn of the year notions of upheaval and change. So smoll, scrunchy, very premature Joshua pops out at the worst time, and the birth was sudden and horrendous and arduous, and some people think it must be because Anabella didn't take proper care.
This is a phoenixflare post, therefore the point of all this, of course, is that Joshua is the hope in the despairing dark, and Dion is the enduring light, and the Sanbreque astrologers will find upon calculation that they are the perfect complementary match.

was reading the princess diaries and had the crack idea of trying to calculate Phillipe’s age.
The first time Phillipe’s age is mentioned is in the titular book, the Princess Diaries. Specifically, Mia’s entry on Thursday, October 2nd.
“What I’m trying to say is, your mother and I thought by not telling you we were doing you a favor. The fact was, we never envisioned that an occasion might arise in which you might succeed the throne. I was only twenty-five when you were born.”
It’s not specified whether he had just turned twenty-five or was turning twenty-six.
We later learn in “Princess in Waiting” that Mia’s birthday is May 1st.
Unfortunately, during the main series of the Princess Diaries, the year is never mentioned.
The original ten full volumes, discounting the novellas set between them, covered most of Mia’s high school years (excepting majority of her junior and senior year, of which we only saw the beginning and end, respectively) - never actually discuss what year it is.
It’s not until the post-high school publication of Royal Wedding came out in 2015 that we have a concrete year for the events of Mia’s diary.
Mia is getting married, and Royal Wedding takes place in the same year that it was written and published - 2015.
Mia is turning twenty-six in 2015.
Therefore, she was born on May 1st, 1989.
And from knowing Mia’s birthdate, we can (kind of) calculate where Philippe’s falls in the year.
Again, he stated back in the first book that he was twenty-five when Mia was born. Twenty-six years later, Phillipe should be turning 51 at some point in 2015 - and most likely, before Mia’s birthday.
However, we actually get an age for Phillipe at the very start of Royal Wedding.
Mia pastes into her diary an article about how Phillipe - At fifty years old - had crashed his car on Wednesday of the week prior (unlike movie counterpart, he lives, don’t worry).
Mia’s first entry is on April 28th.
Mia makes no mention of her father’s birthday in any of the following entries, meaning it either fell some point during the week prior, or comes after her birthday.
However, as Phillipe has to turn 51 before her birthday if he was twenty-five when she was born, it’s more likely it falls the week prior.
Therefore, Phillipe’s birthday falls somewhere between April 23rd through April 27th, 1964. Probably.
My brain hurts.
#princess diaries#Phillipe Renaldo#Artur Christoff Phillipe Gerard Grimaldi Renaldo#I’m saying Renaldo because that’s what their family name is in the books - not Renaldi#book verse not movie verse

younger sister ⸺ open
children: none
fianceé ⸺ valentine knightly
✦ 004 ・ BACKGROUND
TRIGGER WARNING(S) ! ⸺ DEATH, TRAFFICKING MENTION
ignorant bliss and ambition oftentimes don't typically go hand in hand, such contradiction defying successful meshing together. however, the fonseka family miraculously managed contrasting qualities, needless to say though circumstances hadn't always been that way. hailing from a hotspot bustling an overflow of opportunity and chance, an otherwise stark reminder loomed over adrian considering his family's status. tightly packed within a two bedroom, one bathroom residence, sharing personal space with his beloved sister well into early adolescence.
outsiders looking in would tend to perceive their standing as less than privileged ⸺ sacrificing to make ends meet, subjecting their children to early labor, anything to capably sink their claws into obtaining that american dream ⸺ a devout expedition from rags to riches. between numerous years combined with a myriad of networking and researching, adrian would eventually acquire a parlous habit of immersing one self into the gambling scene, efficiently demonstrating worthiness on proving grounds. rather quickly, he initiated connections with big sharks and some of new jersey's empirical top dogs, triumphantly establishing ties towards becoming officiated as a venture capitalist.
although, it wasn't until a particularly late evening of emerging from one of atlantic city's ever so lively casinos did crisis rear its ugly head, a urgent call of his mother frantically informing him of his sister's abrupt vanishing changing life as he knew it. sent off to another day's journey for school, expected to return upon denouement, except she never had. not a trace of her was apparent in locating whereabouts, and it only elicited a livewire of anxiousness and determination to seep into adrian's bones. the household slipped under a wave of despair, exuberance once prevalent among the family akin to a comforting blanket, now replaced with a frigid veil of gelidness.
as if situations weren't already horrid, it was difficult for adrian not to notice the steadily deteriorating nature consuming his parents. whereas his mother picked up extra shifts to forestall unwanted thoughts, his father on the other hand led down a much darker path, sinking into the habitual addiction of staking bets despite his scolding adrian of surrounding himself within the same environment. unlike his son, possession of self-restraint was not in arlo's favor, hastily tangling him up into perilous factions of overhanging threats and troublous deadlines. back to back extensions were desperately plead for, until finally they'd no longer be accepted, resulting in adrian and his mother coming face to face with arlo swathed about a body bag for identification.
by that time? enough was enough. tragedy intertwined calamity entranced his mother to stay in their very hometown that triggered disturbing reminiscences, much to adrian's dismay, yet he simply wouldn't have it. nothing there was left for them, he'd convince, despite her objections to his sister remaining missing in action. diatribes of his nonchalant, brute nature were often flung in his face, their once tender relationship falling victim to disintegrating into mere nothingness. miraculously, he finally wore her down enough to move, persuading her of seizing a better, newfound life they'd always aspired to with accumulated savings of risky, but ultimately fruitful, business transactions.
upon his arrival to new york city, vengeance and a feral zeal drove behind every one of adrian's actions, the painful reminder of his sister still wandering about the world needling away at senses. what he doesn't know is the further haunting revelation ⸺ the fact his sister was kidnapped into trafficking. contacts sprawled far beyond enterprise, diving into the crime fueled underworld armored with an iron will. the big apple quickly became his stomping grounds, an opportunity to reinvent himself into the self made millionaire who consistently pampers his mother. it didn't take long before they began to regularly enter rooms alongside elitists and prigs, most doting about themselves excluding the truth their fortunes largely inherited from their parents or grandparents. there was no hiding his disdain towards the others, cruising through life carelessly. he often imagined they couldn't possibly fathom the amount of affliction he was forced to endure in his lifetime.
still, adrian recognizes it's taken him a hell of a lot of effort and planning to make it where he is now. the kind of game he was playing stretched beyond simply impressive figures and the number of commas in one's bank. he rapidly understood utilizing chess pieces amidst a game of checkers proved more than essential. as a result? he's undergone a mission, to not only ensure his mother is living comfortable and lavishly - even at the expense of his discomfort around ranking socialists - but to also embark on solidifying his own legacy, simultaneously bringing the strenuous search for his sister to its conclusion.
only problem is, he's resorted to more treacherous methods of attaining said goal, not above knocking a few pieces off the board along the way.
✦ 005 ・ BLURBS
an avid comics collector. an insightful verity only acknowledged by trusted individuals and his mother, adrian has always taken a liking to comics. whether it be x-men, dc comics, or even dark horse, their animated and action-packed contents never ceased to capture the man's attention. such secrecy this is, he'd rather die than to reveal this.
cold hands, warm heart. biting and sarcastic by nature, more often than not pitching out wit to anyone who comes across him, adrian is incredibly off-putting to the majority. only those deemed most important are privileged to witness his tender, loving characteristics.
all about the benjamins. wielding the title as a successful venture capitalist? one must be savvy with finances. by default, adrian was already impressively apt towards bookkeeping and maintaining his income versus expenses, and that's only grown exponentially since clawing his way towards becoming wealthily self made.
✦ 006 ・ WANTED CONNECTIONS & PLOTS
scratch my back, i scratch yours. deeply immersed into the vile underworld ruled by criminals and mobs, it's a given hits are successful if not for a significant little bird providing assistance along the way. this could be a dirty civilian, from an investigator to a healthcare worker - possibilities are endless, whom is in close connection with giving adrian intel on who's to be knocked off next.
kiss with a fist. their tryst is toxic, deranged, volatile, a warm flame inviting in to scorch, at best. and yet, they can't stay away from one another. never mind he's promised to marry within a matter of time, they dare say that fact alone spurs more excitement into their heated encounters. ( taken by viviana )
keep your enemies closer. having found several faces at the opposite end of his gun, flinging out threats underlined with heavy promise, needless to say adrian has quite a few people locked in as an opposition. they hate his guts. his ability to keep his tracks clean, and increasingly so his mannerisms of faked refinement in order to climb the big apple's ever towering ladder. they want nothing more than to bring him down by a peg, or few, and adrian is more than happy to reinforce why he should never be fucked with.
finders keepers. his little sister, the yin to his yang, his personal ghost haunting all his dreams. part of his reason to move to new york wasn't just to expand and soar to greater heights, but it was also to locate better connections to pinpoint his sister and bring her home once and for all. what he doesn't know, is that she's much closer than he thinks, and is far from the same girl that slipped through his fingers back in new jersey.

Rethinking the narrative of Hamilton as a poor child held back by illegitimacy
We’ve outgrown a number of the myths that Chernow invents or embellishes from Flexner and Miranda ran with, but AH as a humble child in the West Indies, struggling with poverty and the stigma of illegitimacy seems to persist, no matter the lack of initial evidence for that narrative and the excellent scholarship over the past 10 years or so that flips it on its head.
AH’s maternal grandfather was very wealthy; Rachel Faucette’s inherited wealth was what supposedly attracted John Lavien.
James Hamilton (b 1725 or so) was notably not wealthy. Though a “gentleman” from a respected Scottish family, as a younger son he went to make his way as a merchant at the Caribbean, and pretty much failed at every business venture, as far as we know. In 1765, he was hired to settle a matter in St. Croix, and at some point Rachel and their two kids, James and Alexander, either joined him or made their way there independently. It’s not at all clear that James “abandoned” the family or what happened - it seems just as likely that Rachel, perhaps realizing that their sons’ best options were getting involved in trade, decided to stay where she had an extended wealthy family who could also support her as a merchant/shopkeeper. AH started working really young (he’s 9 if you believe the 1757 birthdate), which was a pretty fantastic way to gain knowledge and experience, especially if his parents realized - and they likely did - that he was intellectually gifted.
Upon the death of his mother, who owned 5 enslaved persons, had silverware and leather chairs and a decent collection of books - definitely middle-class-ish - AH initially goes to live with his uncle and cousin, who were the two wealthiest people on St. Croix. As mentioned above, he was also already working as a clerk, ascending to what can best be described as the business manager by the time he leaves for NY, earning a pretty tidy sum as a single-man - he was likely upper-middle class. [A brief note: at no point does Edward Stevens or Thomas Yard, his brother-in-law, state that AH or his brother ever lived with the Stevens family. That conjecture comes more than a century later sourced to a census of the Stevens family that they had two male servants around the ages AH and his brother would have been. But I think if AH lived with the Stevens family, that would have come up well before the 1920s.] His first cousin provides him with what Newton calculates as 196 pounds sterling at that time, when the average British and American worker made somewhere between 10-15 pounds sterling PER YEAR. AH arrives in the colonies and lives with either the comfortably middle-class (Mulligan) or the wealthy elite (Elias Boudinot and William Livingston) before beginning his studies at King’s/Columbia College. There’s also no note about any difficulty in him getting into Elizabethtown Academy or King’s - no one was holding it over his head that he was a bastard.
So the facts of AH’s life 1768-1779 don’t really seem to be what’s shaping the narrative. Instead, it seems to me that two things are interfering with the interpretation:
1. AH’s 1769 letter to Edward Stevens in which he gripes “I contemn the grov’ling and condition of a Clerk or the like” which makes him seem somehow downtrodden in poverty. But there’s no evidence that that was the case, or that AH wasn’t just annoyed by being a clerk and thought a different job - or a war - would better employ his talents/allow for greater study for him to become a leisurely gentleman.
AH may have started working for Beekman and Cruger as early as 1766, at the age of 9-12 years old, perhaps having previously worked in his mother’s store. JCH writes:
The little leisure which he could command from his mercantile duties was devoted to study; his knowledge of mathematics was enlarged; he became fond of chemistry; and although his proficiency in it was small, he often urged it as a pursuit well adapted to excite curiosity and create new combination of thought.
Among the books to which he had access, he preferred those which treat of some branch of ethic. His favorite authors were Pope and Plutarch....
He often also, at this time, exercised himself in composition on moral topics, to which he afterwards occasionally resorted as a relaxation from the arduous labours of his professional life; and thus, by his varied studies, his mind became rich in materials awaiting his call. The Life of Alexander Hamilton
Although AH wrote to Edward Stevens in 1769 that "I contemn the grov’ling and condition of a Clerk or the like,” and Nathaniel Pendleton would later write that Hamilton “conceived so strong an aversion to [clerkship] as to be induced to abandon altogether the pursuits of commerce”, according to JCH, his father also felt his time as a clerk was very important:
This occupation was the source of great and lasting benefit to him; he felt himself amply rewarded for his labours by the method and facility which it imparted to him; and amid his various engagements in after years adverted to it as the most useful part of his education. The Life of Alexander Hamilton, my emphasis.
Other biographers have speculated that AH’s time as a clerk was probably critical for his understanding of commerce and finance and to the development of both his leadership and writing skills.
JCH also writes:
With a strong propensity to literature, he early became a lover of books, and the time which other youth employ in classical learning, was by him devoted to miscellaneous reading, happily directed by the advice of Doctor Knox, a respectable Presbyterian divine, who, delighted with the unfolding of his mind, took a deep interest in his welfare. The Life of Alexander Hamilton
This role for Knox is doubtful; Rev. Hugh Knox first visited St. Croix Sept/Oct 1771, and did not come to reside there until May 1772, only a few months before AH would leave for NY.
2. AH, in 1779-1780, certainly is sensitive to his lack of advancement in the army while others with less ability/experience advance thanks to nepotism. He doesn’t have the family connections, true, but he’s far from the only person frustrated by the way appointments are handed out - James Monroe also left the army because he couldn’t get a command.
And at no point does AH’s illegitimacy ever seem to hold him back - in fact, up until he made a number of political enemies, no one seemed to care. Illegitimacy was not at all uncommon, particularly in the West Indies; Newton offers up another example of a couple pretending to be married. There’s no record whatsoever that AH was ever taunted about being a bastard as a child, adolescent, or young man (the first recorded innuendos about it actually date from the late 1780s - he’s 30 or older). Likewise with the loss of his mother - a lot of children were orphans. These were just not life details that put him outside any veneer of respectability.
He’s able to rise to the level of aide-de-camp for Washington and married into a wealthy Dutch-American patrician family with, based on the lack of comments on his birth, not even a shrug. JCH does note that marrying into the Schuyler family was one of the most important events of his father’s life, but one never gets the impression from AH’s own writing that he thought they were inherently superior to him - no, this was the class of people whom he had always belonged with and rubbed shoulders with.
And perhaps other than the times he was in school, I’m 90% comfortable stating he almost always had servants - while living with his parents, his mother alone, his cousin, as a clerk, in the colonial American households, and then perhaps with a brief break while studying, he also had at least one servant in the colonial Army and for the rest of his life.
Hamilton’s St Croix education

@megah3rz I'm going to just make this it's own post bc of the sheer number of images here, but anyhow, here's my 2025 reexamination of my 2017 attempt to calculate AA character birthdate ranges, now complete with a timeline-age comparison, and charts showing my work.
I tried to hit every major character, but there's a lot of recurring characters who would also be narrowed down more than character's who only appear in one game. Rayfa is the only character with a canonical birthdate, good for her, but her December birthday also means we have to consider December as a valid month for several characters who's end of year ages we don't know, meaning likes of ??s for a few characters.
The charts are set up to list the date and age for each month, to make it easier to compare one month across multiple years to try and spot changeovers (i.e. Phoenix's birthday range being so narrow bc of his age in October across years). The year and numbers at the bottom of each chart (above the green note section) are the "end of year ages if born in this year" lines.
Due to the nature of Excel, some of the "yrs" got cut off in the individual character chart's, but hopefully the base data is still viewable (some other weird things had to be done like the "--" to show thru dates in the timeline, bc Excel wants to make something like "2-4" into "Feb, 4" automatically; great program for organizing info, terrible when I'm not using the actual functions for that info). Not the prettiest charts in the world, but I tried to go with some color changes to make them readable at least.
Anyhow, this was a ton of fun to reexamine, especially now that I had the information from the officially localized AAI2 court record profiles, which I did not have in 2017. Honestly, I don't think the writers actually thought out the birthdates like, at all, looking at this, so I think fans can make up whatever they want and it would still be fine, but it was fun to try and take a guess anyhow. But thanks for asking about this silly little old theorycrafting project of mine!
EDIT: Barely had this posted and realized I had misinterpreted some of the data. Should be fixed now, although there is quite possibly other things I missed, sorry about that (the data should still at least be good, even if my interpretations of it were done on sleepy brain time).

Background
The only son of Baron Harrow was never a promising heir. Sentimental, restless, and left motherless far too soon, Adrian was raised by a man hollowed out by grief. Supper after supper passed in silence across a long table, where love had long since vanished. Life in the countryside was grey, lonely — until Henry and Marianne. The physician’s daughter and the baron’s ward, they became Adrian’s world. Laughter, loyalty, and youth bound the three of them.
But children grow. And Marianne — clever, radiant, impossibly graceful — became the center of his universe. She had no title, yet carried herself like royalty. No woman in London or Paris could compare. Unfortunately, Henry noticed too. And he moved faster.
When they announced their engagement, Adrian fled — enlisting under the guise of duty to the Crown and a desire to serve on the battlefield. In truth, he could not bear to see the woman he loved in the arms of his closest friend. Wounded, he returned to find that Henry and Marianne remained unwed. The match had quietly fallen apart. Still, one glance from Adrian across the room - one laugh, given too easily - and everything began to unravel. Envy bloomed into fury. Henry demanded a duel. Adrian accepted without flinching.
But at dawn, it was only Adrian who arrived - pistol in hand, guilt twisting in his gut. Henry had left a letter: No love is worth a man's life. But Adrian disagreed. He would have died. He would have killed. For love. For pride. He could no longer tell which.
He married Marianne soon after. Scandalous, yes — a baron’s son and a commoner. But love had demanded it. Only, her heart had not returned from Henry’s saddle. She smiled out of duty, slept in silence, and stared past him. Adrian tried — oh, how he tried — but affection curdled into bitterness. He drank more. Lost money at the card tables. Spent weeks in London, in the company of women and men whose names he never learned. He wanted to forget. Himself most of all.
Then illness came for her — blood on lace, skin like wax. He sat at her bedside, night after night, praying for a miracle. There was none. He granted her last wishes. He sent her last letter to Henry. Her final breath came softly. She died without ever saying I love you.
Ten years were spent in lust, travel, and dissociation. Now, Adrian Harrow — newly named Baron Harrow after his father’s passing — stands on the edge of ruin. The estate is nearly gone, the title little more than a shell. Still handsome, still sharp — but hardened. He returns to society at the invitation of his cousin, the ruling Baron Alvarado. Not for pleasure, but necessity. He needs a wife. A wealthy one. And if he must charm, seduce, deceive — he will.
Because Adrian knows love is a luxury. And survival is an art.

Death the Kid's True Birthday, Has It Been Solved??
i've been wracking my brain to figure out Kid's bday for such a long time, and I think I found it. Will explain the theory below.
-
Firstly, Atsushi Ohkubo said in response to a question many years ago, that Death the Kid is 13~15 in the series. The reason for no set date is because he is probably referring his age by the whole series. He is shown and canonically to be short in the beginning, and in the end of manga where he grew taller, so we know that they did all age throughout the whole story.
People in Japan speculated his birthday to be August 08, because the numbers are mirrored and is 8 (was there's another reason? Don't remember).... but... what if it was not that off the mark? What if his birthday WAS august, just not on that day? Now... let me tell you where I suspect his birthdate is... In the manga, there is chapter where Kid is in a library where he wants to check out a book. On one page, we see Kid's ID in the manga, but it is illegible and the words are not visible, but when we go to the anime, and watch the HD version, you can see things more clearly, but of course it's in Japanese. But the Japanese letters are not the focus. What the focus is, is the numbers. Look at the top middle, then the date issued at the near bottom.
The date this was issued was somewhere around the 2000's, so it can not be outside of that. Soul Eater manga was released on May 12, 2004, so it fits with everything so far.
The other part to focus on is this: 10089818
Those numbers look random, but they might not be.
If you take the last few digits, then go by Japanese date format, it's year, month, then day. Right? So.. 89/8/18 = 1989 August 18th, then if we use the age range that Mr. Ohkubo said to us, then calculate from the year the main manga series first released which is May 12th 2004 from 1989/08/18 from his assumed birthdate, the date between is 14 years and 268 days. And since Soul Eater not! manga storyline is about 1 year before the mains story, that's 1 year off, making it 13 years! And the numbers are still mirrored like 808 too!
So, if this assumed to be correct, his birthday was right under our noses all along! And everything I see so far, fits too perfectly to just be a coincidence. But if it is just a coincidence, then how tf did I do this?? Even if we don't get the exact date, I'm sticking to this for now. lol If anyone else wants to celebrate on this date with me too, go for it!
#soul eater#atsushi ohkubo#death the kid#anime#theory#headcanon#soul eater kid#birthday#bday#this would mean kid is 34 now lol#soul eater fanart#id card#but hey that's just a theory

bio under the cut
Han Young-Ji was born in Duluth, Georgia to James Han and Kim Da-Som. She was a very active girl since she was a child, and when she began to show interest in martial arts, her parents agreed to allow her to go to South Korea, where she would study under her aunt, Kim Da-Eun.
Under her aunt and great-grandfather’s tutelage, Young-Ji became an exceptional fighter. When she was seventeen, her dojo made it to the sekai taikai. Young-Ji herself made it all the way to the captain’s battle, but failed to snatch the victory after her opponent “accidentally” broke her arm on the mat.
Faced with shaming the family and their dojo, there were no complaints when Young-Ji returned to the states after the tournament, finishing high school and enrolling in college. That was where she opted to start going by her english name, Charlotte (or Charlie, rather), as a way to distance herself from her family’s dojo.
Karate and tang su do were always a big part of her life, however, and she found herself working as a sensei on the side, though her main career was as a column writer for a newspaper in new york.
Her freedom from her family, however, was short lived. Joining her aunt and her associate, john kreese, in their war against another dojo was the last thing she wanted, but her aunt and great grandfather knew exactly how to twist her arm.
And so, charlie joined in training the newly minted Cobra Kai dojo in preparation for the sekai taikai, which she accompanied the team for. Now back in the place where her career in karate derailed, she finds herself struggling to stay loyal to her family.
PERSONALITY
While her demeanor is generally bright, if not a little absentminded, her personality changes completely when she’s in a fight/match. When in a match, she becomes very stoic and every move is carefully calculated.
In general, charlie is empathetic to a fault. She has a tendency to be too trusting, and tends to always look for the good in people.
